USED BMW PARTS

BMW, short for Bayerische Motoren Werke, is one of the most well-known & respected luxury German car brands worldwide. Dubbed the “ultimate driving machine”, BMW’s Deutschland roots indicate high-tech performance & engineering.

Despite their stellar reputation, BMW car parts are not fail-proof, & they’re known as one of the most expensive car brands when it comes to car repairs. As a result, many owners opt for BMW used auto parts instead of buying new parts.

Are BMW parts expensive?

BMWs are one of the most, if not the most expensive auto brands when it comes to repairs & maintenance costs. There are a few reasons why BMWs are so expensive to maintain and fix:

  • They are made with many specialty parts that aren’t common on other cars.
  • They use high-end manufacturers, like Bosch.
  • Most of their parts need to be imported, and that extra cost can add up quickly at the repair shop.

As you can see, repair costs & BMW maintenance add up quickly. Fortunately, their parts are built to last, so if something needs to be replaced, you can rest assured that the same problem won’t happen again.

Are their engines reliable?

Part of what makes BMW one of the best-selling high-performance brands is the dynamic engines under the hood. Their engines are known for their high performance while maintaining a smooth ride, making them some of the most fun cars to drive.

By far, the most common complaints with BMW engines are:

  1. Failure of the cooling system that keeps the engine from overheating
  2. Oil leaks due to bad gaskets on the valve cover or around the oil filter

Both of these problems can cause oil to leak, which results in an overheated engine. If left unchecked, low oil levels cause extra wear & tear that could eventually require a complete engine replacement.

Are their transmissions reliable?

BMW transmissions are generally considered reliable & will last a long time with proper maintenance. Most BMWs feature the Steptronic, which is automatic transmission but can switch into a Sport mode that requires shifting like a manual.

Customer reports with the Steptronic transmission have been overwhelmingly positive. However, they are known for having problems with the mechatronic unit, which is the computer that electronically controls the pressure inside your transmission.

BMWs can also run into everyday transmission problems, like low fluid or slipping gears, but most will last well above 100k miles with the proper care and maintenance. If you end up having to replace your transmission, you can save by buying a BMW transmission used.
